Description
Life size, silver statue, commissioned by Gorham, a silver manufacturing company (Rhode Island, USA) for display in their exhibit in the Manufactures Building at the Columbian Exposition of 1893. It used 30,000 ounces of silver, the largest silver casting in the world at that time.
Annotation
A copy, cast in bronze is in Providence, Rhode Island.
Sculptor
- Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (Colmar 1834 - 1904), French sculptor who is remembered mainly for designing the Statue of Liberty (Wikipedia).
