Description

Two roman columns sitting on a base block supporting a canopy. Between the columns in the center is a bust of Christopher Columbus sitting on top of an inscribed block. All elements are granite, except for the bronze bust.

Annotation

The Italian-American community in Iowa donated this monument to the state in 1938. It was financed by individual subscriptions. Anthony L. Sarcone of Des Moines, an Italian-American publisher and civic leader, dedicated 20 years to the project.
