Description

Marble statue of Columbus standing with his proper left leg forward in front of a low wall.

Inscription(s)

COLOMBO

On the backside of the pedestal:

DONATED BY
THE ITALIAN RESIDENTS
OF NEW LONDON
OCT. 12, 1928.

Annotation

The statue was a gift to the City of New London by Italian-American residents, organized for this purpose as the Columbus Statue Fund. It stands at Tyler Square, in what for decades was the geographic heart of the Italian-American community. The dedication ceremony was scheduled to corresponded with the 436th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America.

In the background you see on both photos a modern car. The 1930s postcard has a T-Ford, the 2001 a Mercury Grand Marquis with an Ohio license plate, which was my transport during my stay in New England.
