Description

Statue standing on a globe, pointing with his right arm.

Inscription(s)

La República de Honduras á Cristóbal Colón, 1492-1892

Annotation

Comayagüela is the twin city of Tegucigalpa. Often, the Comayagüela statue is listed as Tegucigalpa (as on this website until 23 June 2004).

October 12, 1997, a group of 300 Honduran indigenous protestors celebrated Columbus Day by tearing down and estroying this statue. It was dismembered and spattered with red paint by the protesters decrying 505 years of "massacre committed by the Spaniards.". The statue was taken to the University of Honduras, where it will be restored.
