JEAN BATTEN
Pioneer aviatrix was born in Rotorua on September 15 1909.
Her achievements as the finest woman pilot of her era made
her a legend in her lifetime and brought honour to New Zealand.
She was the first woman to make the return flight from England
to Australia and to cross the South Atlantic and Tasman Seas.
The people of Rotorua named their famous daughter
Hine-o-te-Rangi, Daughter of the Skies.
Jean Batten died in Majorca in 1982.

bronze bas relief to the people
of Rotorua in 1994.

It has been erected in Jean Batten Garden
to commemorate Woman's Suffrage Year
