The Naturhistorisches Museum was built 18721881 after the design of Gottfried Semper (Hamburg 1803Rome 1879) and Carl von Hasenauer (Wien 1833Wien 1894). The outer four façades were adorned with numerous statues, heads and reliefs were, representing the scientific progress and symbolizing the forces of nature.
The ensemble of sculptures is a continuous outline of the history of the physical worldview:
