William Rathbone V Memorial

William Rathbone V (1787-1868) was a member of the distinguished and successful Rathbone family who had numerous businesses from sawmills to cotton trading, ship building and merchant banking. The family contributed much to Liverpool, including public baths and wash houses, to try and prevent further cholera epidemics such as the one experienced in 1832. Rathbone also established the Liverpool Corporation schools and sent famine relief to Ireland during 846-7.

The Mayor of Liverpool, Charles Mozley and the town councillors unanimously agreed that a memorial to Rathbone should take the form of a life-size statue in the newly created Sefton Park, as it was close to the family home at Greenbank. It was unveiled in january 1887.

The statue is Sicilian marble with the steps and lower section made of Cornish granite and the upper part granite from Aberdeen. The statue was designed by John Henry Foley and completed by his pupil Thomas Brock, who also created the plaques depicting 'Commerce', 'Education' and 'Charity'.
